The Rev. S. H. Sarkissian

Minister of Chalmers Church, Hamilton, 1906-07

(The following undated obituary notice has been found in the Chalmers archives. More research will be required to date this item and put it into perspective. Ironically, though the clipping appears to have come from a Hamilton publication the references to Mr. Sarkissian's role in the church in Hamilton are quite vague. There is a reference to Dr. Fletcher, who was Minister of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, but the obituary only alludes to Chalmers Church and does not actually name it.)

Rev. S. H. Sarkissian, formerly of Hamilton, was struck by a train.

Word has reached Hamilton that Rev. S. H. Sarkissian, formerly of this city, was recently killed near Denver, Colorado, when a train struck his auto on a crossing. Mr. Sarkissian was a pupil in the Hamilton collegiate when a boy. He came originally from Armenia, and was befriended by the late Rev. Dr. Fletcher, who was ever willing to assist a man in seeking an education. After leaving Hamilton, Mr. Sarkissian graduated from the University of Toronto, and then took a missionary post near Newdorf, Sask. Then he returned east and took a charge in Hamilton. After that he occupied a post at Oak Lake, Man., where he was for several years before returning to Saskatchewan.

During the war he acted as recruiting sergeant, but defective eyesight prevented his going overseas. He raised over $5,000 in Saskatchewan alone for Y.M.C.A. work.

About a year ago Mr. Sarkissian became interested in Near East relief work, and in this connection he left Canada to go to Colorado. He leaves a widow and four children.
